This forum is presented by Yelina Perez, Sharol Melisa Polo and Jandrith Prada.
We strongly believe that, in order to provide each child an equal, high-quality education teachers need to be trained and well-equipped with the knowledge and tools to effectively teach students in their classrooms. School leaders need to invest in appropriate professional development to support the learning of teachers.
We have two questions for you, please share your answers with us
1) Can students learn a language through the teacher's teaching style, no matter what their learning style is?
2) Is the teaching system based on memorization and repetition accurate/ideal for the children social interaction and communication skills development?

ReplyDelete1)I think it might be possible if the teacher is able to recognize the students's individual variables, styles and learning preferences to design and practise a particular method.In Krashen's words "We all acquired the languages the same way", but he emphises the students's individual uniqueness and ultimately there are many linguistic elements and ways we share when learning that are the same.
ReplyDelete2) I don't think this method of Behaviourism might help us in the process of communication since it is limited to the student himself and not neccesary in the involvement in the learning environment when activeley using the language for communication with others.
Hi Manuel, I agree with you, I do not think that behaviorism is the ideal method for children to develop social and communication skills since it limits children in terms of communication with others.
Delete1 I consider that it is possible, however, since not everyone acquires knowledge easily in a certain way, it would be essential for a teacher to find out the type of intelligences that their students have so that they learn in the most effective way.

ReplyDeleteIn my opinion, it could be possible as far as, students can identify their learning style. This can be considered one of the most effective ways to learn; when students can adjust their learning style to the teacher's methodology, learning can take place easily and effectively. The teachers can adjust their methodology to teach students, but students overcome the teacher in number, which means, one teaching method vs varied learning styles.

It could be accurate depending on the context, but also on the effectiveness it is used by both the teacher and the students. By repeating phrases or simple statements, students can in a moment use them to communicate effectively in appropriate contexts.
I agree with you teacher, because I remember that in my second semester of german the teacher used to assign to many exercices of memorization and repetition, and at first that was annoying but in the third semester and the others I realized that I could remember all and use it to develop other skills , so I think is a really good way to learn.
DeleteI think that is posible but is not the most effective way. Teacher and students must work together and take un count that the teacher can't always teach in their learning style but the teacher, can't only use a single teaching style because every student is different and when teaching a language is neccesary to be creative and change the method regularly to support every single skill: writing, reading, listening, speaking. Otherwise, the student will learn something but not all the things he need to have a satisfactory development of the language.

So no, this may help the student understand and acquire vocabulary and grammar rules but when is time to think and then speak, this method is useless.

DeleteStrongly agree, there are more effective teaching strategies and methods than just memorizing. We must promote imagination and creation in students, it is an important part in cognitive development.

Exactly Valentina. We as teachers cannot be selfish, we have to think in our students needs. The idea is to create a good environment where everyone can feel comfortable and learn a lot. Also, to provide different ways to learn depending on the students' needs.

DeleteExacly, I agree, It is possible, however it is imperative for a teacher to be creative, so it will be possible to find ways of teaching meaningfully by using different teaching methods and clarifying doubts.

1. I believe students can try their best to follow their teachers' guidance. It might be difficult if the teaching style they are dealing with it is not exactly they one they feel comfortable with but it is possible to gain something if students have the attitude. Now, the point is that teachers should be mindful of their students' feelings and expectations as well. Significant learning will happen at the very moment teachers make an agreement with their students and support each other.

They are like the foundation or beginning of the language process because we definitely need to learn things by heart so that we can develop more complex skills later such as natural interaction and communication with native speakers.

DeleteYes, I agree with you, the teaching style will not always be appropriate for each student's learning style. It is important that each person knows her learning style so that she can use it to its advantage, regardless of the teacher's teaching style, the development and acquisition of knowledge will be effective.

I believe that it can become possible and effective, although the teaching and learning style of the students and the teacher are not the same, the students can adapt to the teacher's method, and this does not indicate that the teacher does not have another style of teaching, in a classroom where the students' learning method tends towards a style, the teacher can adapt to this in order to teach effectively.
ReplyDelete2. Not necessarily, although repeating a phrase in a specific situation can be useful, in communication there is not only a way to express something, sentences or phrases already memorized is fine, but in a spontaneous conversation it is not necessarily the best way.

Yes, it could be learned and it could be possible, knowing that all students acquire knowledge in a different way, this would be very positive because in this way the teacher could identify which learning style the student uses and in the same sense, get the best out of it by mixing it with your own teaching style.
ReplyDelete2. In my opinion I believe that system based on memorization and repetition accurate / ideal is essential but in a certain way or at a specific age or time. It shows us positive things in a context since it emphasizes and in turn can be used as the beginning we need to learn to develop communication skills, because as we remember things that we have previously memorized, it will serve to complement other interaction and communication skills and develop them more deeply.

1 ) As you said, it allows them to identify what the learning style of each student is, but it is that the teacher adapts to them, not that the students adapt to the teacher. Because that way the learning process would slow down.
Delete1) My answer is yes, many of today's teachers are dedicated to their work and they make students acquire better learning, then if a teacher wants to use a different style in their class and in the end the class is successful, then in a good methodology for language acquisition. Because as you already know there are many theories about how students can learn a language in a meaningful way, it can be the native language or a foreign one. This is due to the environment in which they grow. So the teacher plays an important role for students to learn and thus obtain good results. However, many teachers limit themselves to teaching something different and follow the rules. But as we already know that it is good and can be useful for the future of the students.

The basis of language acquisition is memorization, repetition and socialization to learn the language. It is necessary to find ourselves in an environment where we see and hear the language so that it is easier to acquire it. That is, if we want our second language acquisition process to be faster, we must be in a different environment.
1- Of course, but it must be borne in mind that not all students will reach the same level of understanding, they can learn but it may not be the most efficient way of teaching through the teacher's style, rather this must adapt to the styles to learn from students which would be more effective to achieve meaningful learning
ReplyDelete2- This method is good in certain cases but not for interactions because the children will look like systematized robots, in order to communicate effectively it is necessary to produce the language which would be very versatile when using it taking into account its rules to be able to apply what to any context.
the communicative part is to express our ideas, thoughts through our speech, body gestures, feelings etc but not based on repetitions or memorization
Absolutely. The most important thing is to focus on the students comprehensibility and,in order to do this, the teacher has to be aware of their learning styles, how they actually process the knowledge and perform in the envirinment.Thus, the teacher should ensemble all the students ways of learning to design his class. At least, this is how I thing it should be.

I think that all people are capable of learning a language, the question would be how easy it is for students to respond to a specific and limited teaching style, considering the academic diversity and the different bits of intelligence that students present. As teachers, we should try to use a variety of strategies, methodologies, and techniques that allow us to meet the needs of the students.
ReplyDelete2. I believe that to learn vocabulary and grammatical structures it is necessary to use methods of repetition and memorization, but the good results lie in the good application and mix with other methods and strategies that can achieve that social interaction that children need.
I agree with your opinion Alicia because memorization is a good methodology for students to learn the language and the positive of this process is already evidenced.

DeleteRegarding the second question, it is true that repetition and memorization activities help students to learn new vocabulary, but when interacting we must think of a more adequate teaching system.
I totally agree, since we have a learning style does not mean that we have to focus only on this one, we can also vary and try other styles, other methods, etc.
Delete1. What can I say? Nowadays, many teachers are teaching just beacuse. If we make a list of teachers who really take into account the way we as students learn, it would be daunting, even so, the teaching process continue and even when it is not way to teach, students show that the can learn.

I desagree with something you say in the first answer, for me it is hard to think that 1 person has to take into account the learning styles of 30+ students in a classroom, that it's impossible, and even more when sometimes the students are not even able to identify the learning style that work the best for them.

ReplyDeleteI think it is possible but they should be aware of what their learning style is. Sometimes the teacher's way is not going to work well for every student and that's where teachers should change their teaching method.

It is not accurate or ideal at all. First, students are going to learn only for the moment and not for life. Second, it works well with vocabulary (Written or spoken) but not for grammar or to apply it in the environment. It's best to look for different teaching systems and not use just one.
1. Yes, of course the student can learn, the process may be slower for him and in some cases boring, but significant learning can be generated. This also depends on the teaching strategies the teacher uses. There are tools that are consistent with multiple learning styles. what matters is that the teacher identifies and sees opportunities for better.

But there are other teaching systems that are based on interaction, such as cultural immersion. teach students taking into account the social context of the language being learned. generate dialogue between them taking into account related and varied groups.
1) No, the teachers must transform and reform teaching-learning strategies, since these allow a comprehensive training process to be carried out in students. The teachers must carry out actions such as: teaching, communicating, socializing and evaluating cognitive processes, adapting the contents taking into account the individual needs of each student. There must be a certain relationship between teacher-knowledge-student, focused on teaching and learning.
ReplyDelete2) School cannot consist only of transmitting information, the educational system has been governed by a traditional model that bases learning on memorizing information, which is often irrelevant to daily life. Students cannot be only receivers of information, but thinkers, active agents, autonomous. It is not about teaching the student to memorize or store an exact copy of the information given, rather to let him process that information himself, question himself, understand the content and from there each one develops his own concepts through the process of thought.
I agree because if only the students memorize it would be more than passive learning, the more they use it, the more they apply it in context, the better the learning will be.

ReplyDeleteA teacher must know how to impart knowledge, express ideas and develop thoughts in their students, that is the main function of a teaching method, the more teaching methods the teacher handles, the better the results, so yes, the teaching methods affect positively in the ability to acquire a language, as in any learning, you just need to know how to apply them and when to use them.
In acquiring a language, the method of memorization and repetition serves to acquire the fundamentals of a language, but or necessarily in the development of new ideas, although the bases are available, it does not develop skills to solve problems or creativity, therefore I think that the method of memorization and repetition is good in the beginning of the teaching but not in a long use.

However, it must be taken into account that it is not a matter of imposing one style over the other but of adapting both to each other. It is necessary for there to be flexibility on both sides so that there is harmony and learning can take place.

The system based on memorization in my opinion is a bit archaic but it has many pros, it is a question of good use. If the learner is taught to memorize words without context it is very difficult for the student to be fluent in the language but if instead of words they memorize useful phrases of daily use these may be more useful for them. What I mean is with the proper use it can be a good method to develop social skills in the learner.
I agree with you Daniela. The memorization and repetition system does help the student to be fluent and adding context to practice, will definitely be a good way to communicate effectively.
DeleteYes, Daniela. In thé classroom we can not be rude, we have to create an harmonious environment for teaching. It's a mistake to impose a style because we are different and students are not going to be comfortable.

1. I think it might be posible however, it could be inefficient for both. The learning process could be slow, the student could feel demotivated because they are not learning at the same speed as the others, they can also feel like they are not intelligent or capable enough. However, if they are able to identify their learning style, they can adjust their learning technique. But, this is not a student process only, the teacher must be aware of the multiple learning styles and intelligences, so it would be easier to identify how the students learn better if the teacher is regularly mixing techniques, changing or adapting their teaching style to their student's necessities.

They can help to establish the first relation with a language, but it shouldn’t go further because it interferes a lot when the student is trying to improve, doesn’t leave much space for spontaneity which affects their social interaction, communication skills, transformation and association with new knowledge.

I totally agree with you Dayana. Memorization and repetition are good for improving vocabulary to learn new words. From its pronunciation, spelling and how it is written. but when interacting it is infective because it does not help the development of conversational skills that stimulate and motivate the student to think in the second language.

I agree with you, all children learn differently and have different mental processes. For this reason, the teacher has to find a way to adapt the learning styles in the best possible way, so that each student is satisfied in the learning process.

ReplyDeleteFor teachers, the identification of the student's learning styles can be helpful in the moment of implementing different strategies in the classroom, as for the question, it is possible, the students most of the times adapt to the teacher's teaching styles and later on, adjust that information they receive in a way that the learning process is easier to them.

DeleteThis teaching technique is ideal for a specific part of learning, the early stages. But I don't think it is ideal for the development of social interaction or communication skills, as it tends to be quite limiting and activities such as spontaneous conversations will be more difficult for students to do on their own.

ReplyDeleteI think it will be helpful to create a methodology where we can introduce all the styles, because it is not good to have just one way to teach. We have to take into account that everyone is different and that there are many ways to learn. First, as teachers we must identify the different styles we have in the classroom and then, to create an adequate methodology for teaching. Second, to notice the behaviour of the students when applying a methodology we've already have because it will be possible that it can work. Finally, to make a feedback where students can express how they felt in the class.

Currently, most teachers know that this traditional way to teach does not have much helpful in the learning process. So, we are now applying different and innovative methodologies. But, this method can be useful for example when children have to learn about vocabulary, expressions, grammar rules, conjugation of irregular verbs, etc. because there's a need to memorize them. But, for example, if we need to know the opinion of the students about something they don’t have to memorize their opinion from a book or an article. That’s the difference between how useful the memorization method is and what we have to use for the rest of the needs. So, the learning process has to be a mix between the methods we know are useful depending on the students needs.
Hello, Gloria. I totally agree with you. I believe that traditional techniques are important and many of them are necessary in the teaching process of an L2. But in this specific case, repetition and memorization do not adapt to the situation because it does not help students to develop conversation, nor does it create critical thinking in them. But if it is good to take into account the traditional techniques to teach new vocabularies since in certain cases it is easier to learn a word if you repeat it several times.

ReplyDeleteI think that it is possible because in my experience, we get used to the teacher's technique by force and in the end if you are disposed you learn one way or another .

It´s really hard for an educator to do this with every class and student he has but I do think that as teachers, we should know our students and make the objectives and plans for the class taking into account our learner´s needs and abilities.

As you say, students can adapt to the teacher's learning style; but this could lead to a longer and more difficult learning process for students. For this reason, it is recommended that teachers seek a middle ground between their students' learning styles and how the teacher teaches.

I think it's possible that students can learn, maybe they don't do it much or maybe not in the best way, because their learning depends a lot on the teacher, but there are also other important factors when learning a second language; and it would be very difficult for the teacher to adapt to all learning style of children.
2. No, I do not think that learning based on memorization and repetition is ideal for children or for the development of social or other skills, because it does not allow them to be creative and explore, nor does it encourage their motivation.
1/ I think so, if the student is motivated by his teacher and has the desire. We can learn, it will be more difficult but we can do it. we as students must always have initiative even though the teacher uses a teaching style in which we feel comfortable

It is very important to realize that we are an example for society and for the children we are educating. Our style can influence, but the most important thing is to work it in the best way and to improve our teaching system.
2. I believe in the theory of Noam Chomsky who mentions that learning is something natural and depends a lot on the environment where we grow up. The author and I disagree with the theory of repetition

1. Of course, because teachers share the necessary bases to teach a new language doesn't matter his method, however, teacher always looking for different didactic tools keeping in mind the different learning methods of the students to make them more interesting and interactive for them.

ReplyDeleteStudents can for sure learn a language through their teacher's style but It won't be always long-lasting. Because as students, we have to adapt and know ourselves to practice and learn in the best possible way, but as educators, we can adapt and plan our classes according to our student's needs and abilities without changing drastically our teaching style or personality too. I think It's all about making an effort, to empathize and try to understand our students.

The teaching system of repetition is perfect to master new skills. It helps to improve speed and increases the confidence of our children. And It does help to develop communication skills if It's practiced in a useful way and depending on the students since we have to take into account that everyone is different and sometimes It just better to use other systems and methods.
